Research/Inspiration:  4 hours

Initial concepting:  6 hours over 1 day

Prototyping: 1.5 days

Production: 2 days

Research

I looked on OpenDesk to find examples of flat-cut furniture that can be assembled without hardware. I incorporated aspects of multiple pieces to create the tab & slot design for the photo stand.

Concepts

The photo stand needed to be easily assembled and disassembled by one or two people. I chose to hinge the back & side panels together so these could provide a quick setup structure onto which the other panels (with tab & slot attachment) could be attached. The inside of the photo stand needed to support a full-sized printer as well.

iPad frames needed to be removable so the entire assemble could be collapsible. Velcro was chosen as the method of attachment between the iPad holders and the frame itself.

Production

Multiple issues were fixed after the prototype:

  • The panels were resized to allow the unit to be fully collapsible
  • The printer shelf was re-worked to be easily assembled after the entire unit was intact
  • Base was widened to allow the unit to more easily be assembled on top of it
  • Slots & tabs were adjusted to allow for easier assembly
